Markham Tree Service Run by Certified Arborists
How your trees are cared for changes how safe your home is and what your property is worth. Al Miley & Associates is a family-run tree service company, and our team has provided tree care in Markham communities for many years, from Unionville's heritage streets to the newer homes in Cornell. Much of our work here comes from neighbours and friends who referred us.
Not sure whether a tree should be saved or removed? That is the first question we answer. A certified arborist looks at the tree in person, checks the trunk, roots and canopy, and tells you what kind of shape it is in. If the tree can be kept, we say so — the big shade trees people love are usually the ones worth saving.
Give us a call today for an inspection and advice. At Al Miley & Associates we have the skilled team and equipment needed to assess and remove a tree from any property.

When a Tree Should Be Removed
Most trees we look at can be saved with pruning or better care. Tree removal is the right way forward when a tree is declining past recovery, when storm damage has split the trunk or a major limb, when roots are lifting a driveway or foundation, or when construction needs the ground cleared. Soil compaction, disease, insect damage, road salt and old age are the usual reasons trees reach that point. Whoever you choose for the job, ask for proof of insurance and professional certification before anyone climbs — it is the quickest way to know which local tree services you can trust near the house.
Markham Tree Permits and By-law 2023-164
In Markham you need a permit before you injure or remove a private tree with a trunk 20 cm across or wider, measured 1.37 m above the ground — roughly 8 inches at chest height. That comes from the City's Tree Preservation By-law 2023-164, and it applies whether the tree is healthy or not.
The application fee is $20.50 and a standard review can take up to 45 days, so apply today if the work is tied to a build. Dead, dying and hazard trees are reviewed faster. A tree on the property line needs your neighbour's written consent, and replacement planting is often a condition of approval. We are happy to guide you through the paperwork.
Tree Services We Provide
Tree Pruning and Trimming
Regular tree pruning opens the canopy to light and air, takes weight off weak limbs, and clears branches from roofs, hydro lines and walkways. On young trees it sets a strong structure early. On mature trees it removes deadwood before it falls on its own, which is a safety issue as much as a tidiness one. We prune to professional arboriculture standards instead of topping, because topping forces weak regrowth and shortens the life of the tree. Routine tree care means pruning on a cycle, not waiting for a limb to fail. Overgrown hedges, shrubs and smaller plants can be trimmed the same visit.
Stump Removal and Site Clean-Up
A removal is not finished while the stump is still there. We grind stumps below grade so you can lay sod, plant again or set a patio, and we haul the wood, brush and debris off site. Chips can stay if you want them for garden beds. A professional crew locates underground services first through Ontario One Call to ensure nothing gets cut. Great service on a tree job is simple: show up when we said, protect the lawn, and leave the yard clean.
Tree Health Care, Feeding and Restoration
Trees under stress show it early — thin canopies, dead tips, leaves dropping in August, mushrooms at the base. What matters is diagnosing the real problem before anything is applied, because pests, drought, compacted soil and construction damage all look alike from the driveway. Treatment methods include deep root fertilizing, vertical mulching to open packed soil, pest and disease management, and better watering. Tree care that keeps trees and plants alive costs less than removal and replanting, so we look at tree health first.
Cabling, Bracing and Storm Damage
Multi-stem maples and wide silver maples split in high wind, especially on the open lots in north Markham. Cabling and bracing supports a weak union and holds a heavy limb in place instead of costing you the whole tree. After a storm our team clears hanging limbs, fallen trees and blocked driveways, and we move fast when a tree is on a roof or a car. Call as soon as it is safe to — leaning trunks and lifted root plates get worse, not better.

Areas in Markham We Serve
Our Markham tree service covers the communities below, and we offer the same team and equipment in each one. The trees are different in every part of the city:
-
Old Markham Village & Raymerville — mature maples and oaks on older, narrow lots, often within a few feet of the house.
-
Unionville — heritage streets and tight rear access, where trees come down in sections rather than in one drop.
-
Cornell & Wismer Commons — newer homes with narrow side yards, fence-line trees and rear-lane access.
-
Berczy Village & Greensborough — subdivision trees planted twenty years ago that are now overgrown for the space they were given.
-
Cathedraltown & Victoria Square — open, windy north-end lots where storm damage and leaning trees are common.
-
Angus Glen & Cachet — larger properties with wooded edges and heavy canopy that suit staged pruning over several seasons.
-
Box Grove & Rouge Fairways — properties near the Rouge River, where TRCA regulated areas can affect what gets approved.
-
Milliken Mills & Armadale — residential streets and small businesses needing hydro line clearance and fast turnarounds.
-
Thornhill & German Mills — old silver maples and ash trees, many still standing dead after emerald ash borer.
Tree Questions We Get Asked
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Markham?
Yes, if the trunk measures 20 cm or more at 1.37 m above the ground. The permit is issued by the City of Markham under By-law 2023-164, and it is required even when the tree is dead.
How much does tree removal cost in Markham?
There is no flat rate. Size, species, access, the distance to the home and hydro lines, and whether a crane is needed all change the price. Access matters more than height on most jobs. We quote after seeing the tree in person, so the number you get is one you can trust.
Do you take emergency calls after a storm?
Yes. Contact the office and we will get a crew out. Hanging limbs, split trunks and trees on structures are treated as urgent.
Is stump removal included?
Stump removal is quoted with the job or booked on its own. We grind below grade and can leave the location ready for sod or planting.
Can you remove a tree on the property line?
A shared tree needs written consent from your neighbour before the city will issue a permit. We will tell you exactly what to send in.
